Mens Captain's Report

Welcome to the November newsletter. The Mens and Womens Club Championships have been completed and I especially congratulate all members for their wins in the Championships.

The end of October has meant that a lot of water has fallen on the course. Our dams are full which is good but the major course renovations have been delayed because the greens are too soft. The rain has also caused a delay in the last two major events of the year being the mixed foresomes and the final round of the mixed team series. These events will be rescheduled at a later time. The ladies Shootout has also been deferred.

The mens match play championship has been decided with Duncan Brown winning the scratch event and Kelvin Price winning the handicap event.

The club is regularly updating its Covid requirements. It is important that all members and visitors read these updates on our website. The match committee has resolved not to change any of the current requirements.

Work is continuing on the 6th fairway and 7th tee which we hope to complete shortly. A new fountain has been installed in the 15th Dam. The protective screen has been installed on the 13th tee. Members are reminded to keep behind this screen when members are playing their tee shots from the 12th tee. The temporary screen has been placed on the 7th tee.

Members are reminded that the local rules have been updated and now appear in the following areas:

  1. Notice board outside proshop
  2. Club Website
  3. MiClub Website
  4. MiScore App

During September /October all gardens on the course have been staked with a white peg with a green top. The basic rule  is that if it is pegged then it is a garden and members are entitled to free relief. If it is not pegged then it is a part of the general area of the course. If any member has any concerns over any area of the course please advise me.

The 2021 programme is currently being prepared . Should any members have any suggestions for events to be included please advise me in writing.

When on the course members are reminded of the following

  • All Social play is off the yellow markers. Members please do not practice off the plates or the blue, white or red teeing areas. When practicising please remember to take a bucket and fill your divots.
  • Please repair all divots on the greens,
  • Please take a sand bucket
  • Please rake the bunkers and leave the rakes in the middle of the bunkers
  • Please keep up with the group in front
  • Please stick to the ready golf principles
  • Please do not drive carts in arears where they are prohibited. Please stay on the designated paths and outside the blue lines.

Ladies Captain's Report

The Annual Ladies AGM was held on the 20th of October and the members of the Ladies Section were re-elected unopposed. Sally Hopkins & Di Beechey have stepped down and we thank them both for their hard work & valuable contributions. We warmly welcome Vicky Foster and Deb Flanagan who have agreed to take their places. We have co-opted Di Beechey back onto the Section as her knowledge & input is invaluable.

We thank Kim Cardiff for taking on the role of Vets Delegate.

The office bearers for 2021 are:

President:                   Liz Robinson

Captain:                      Sheena Asken

Secretary:                   Sharon Anderson / Geraldine Turner

Treasurer:                   Vicky Foster

General Section:        Helen Potter & Deb Flanagan

Co-opted:                   Di Beechey

Vets Delegate:           Kim Cardiff

Championships were played in October in lovely cool weather.  Congratulations to all the winners & everyone who participated.

Scratch Winners:

Division I         Helen Potter

Division II        Anne Burke

Division III       Maria McGann

Nett Winners:

Division I         Robyn Krahe

Division II        Kath Payn

Division III       Rosie Judd

Unfortunately the Top Ten Shootout which was due to be played prior to the AGM had to be postponed as a result of the rainy weather and wet course conditions. It will take place on Tuesday the 17th of November and my hope is that Covid conditions will have eased further by then, allowing for caddies and some spectators. Remember to enter this competition next year, the prize money is good and you have 10 chances over the year to post a qualifying score.

The Rookies Ambrose was another casualty of the rainy weather. We will try to reschedule this event sometime before the end of the year if possible.

Melbourne Cup next Tuesday 3rd of November will NOT be our usual big day with golf, lunch, sweeps & a fashion parade thanks to the presence of Covid 19. Course renovations have also been rescheduled for next week so only the one 9 (played twice) will be in play.

The last event of interest for 2020 is the CCWGA sponsored day on the 10th of November. This is a team of 4 & a draw for partners. The draw will be out next week. The prizes are generous & if the weather plays along it should be a good day.

Closing Days are on Tuesday 1st of December and Thursday the 3rd of December respectively.  Both are team events.

Our Christmas Party and Presentation are programmed for Tuesday 8th of December. We thank our President Liz Robinson who is working very hard to make this a reality, the venue is yet to be confirmed.

F-Troop Report

For the month of October 2020 we had mixed weather ranging from hot to cold and wet. We had one washout day where we could not get on the course.

The average of 12/13 volunteers each week has continued and a good turn up on the long weekend.

Projects worked on this month were  rubbish and loose timber pick up around the course; tree maintenance, intensive weeding of the wedding garden; hedge maintenance; firewood preparation for next year's firewood supplies; removal of weed from the dams; general garden weeding and tidying up; cleaning of the bush toilets; tidy up around the clubhouse and BBQ area; tidy up of pathways to the 1st and 10th tees including the wedding garden and practice nets; removal of seeding camphor Laurel trees at the 17th tee;  more ground cover plants in the 6th native garden including weeding; weeding and trimming of the front street garden; clean up of the ex-ladies garden at the 13th and a start made on weeding the 5th green garden.

We are always looking for more volunteers so if you have some spare time on Monday mornings to help out with our projects we would be happy to see you.

The F-Troopers meet at the Green Keepers Shed at 7.00 am and work through until 10.00 am after which we have morning tea supplied.

Superintendent's Report

October brought with it 218mm of rain, over 6 days.

  • October 2019 ........44mm             Rainfall (Average 48mm)
  • November 2019.....24mm             Rainfall (Average 99mm)

Our dam water supply is full and clear of salt.

The average night time temperature for October was 13.6 degrees.

The average day time temperature for October was 21.7 degrees.

The greens are still waiting for their spring renovations to be done. We had to pull the pin on them due to the large amount of rainfall. We will be punching in 5/8 core holes, scarify and top-dressing the greens with approximately 50 tonnes of sand once the weather is kinder.

The fairways were sliced at a depth of 100mm, an insecticide was sprayed over all the fairways to stop a new insect cycle (Bill Bug and Black Beatle) mainly. The fairways then received a granular fertiliser to get them moving.

Bare areas around 1st, 10th,15th, 16th and 17th, which is the hangover from winter have been cut out and repaired.

The new work (bare area ) on the 6th tee is in operation. We are doing as much as we can, when we can.

Between Club Champs, rain and all our other duties, progress is slow.

Course Superintendent

Physio Golf Blog
Low Back pain and Golf...

By Russell Tuckerman, Physiotherapist  at East Gosford Physiotherapy

Do you worry about your back pain getting worse with golf?

Do you ever wake up in the morning with back pain and groan getting out of bed?

Some simple things can help you to reduce back pain by improving mobility and stability.

In the last blog (October newsletter)  we looked at core stability and how this could improve your golf swing and handicap, and in earlier blogs we looked at flexibility particularly in the chest region and how important that is for a full golf swing.

This next series of exercises are the "go to" exercises for low back pain or stiffness.

Back pain often increases as we age due to stiffness in the little joints in the back called facet joints. They join the vertebra together and exist through the entire spine but tend to wear out the most in the lower back leading to what your doctor may have called Lumbar Degeneration.

More simply this is arthritis in your low back which leads to stiffness and pain when you move. Often the big twisting and bending movements  of golf can aggravate pain in the lower back especially if you have some "wear and tear" or lumbar degeneration.

TIPS to Prevent Low Back pain

1.      Sit with support in lower back and good posture before golf (driving to golf etc)

2.      Warm up well before you play (Don't swing too hard, too quickly)

3.      Maintain good muscle control around your back, tummy, and hips (core stability)

-Do your own home exercise routine or find a class for motivation.

4.      Lift your  golf bag and buggy out of the car with a straight back and bend at your knees and hips (Please ask advice on this technique if you are unsure)

5.      Learn how to squat well to put in your tee and mark the ball on the green - don't bend at your back - keep your spine neutral and bend at your hips and knees.

6.      Do some back mobility exercises regularly at home if you are stiff or sit for many hours in a day. (see example below)

7.      Stay mobile and walk regularly- avoid long periods of sitting

8.       Try and get good sleep and ensure you have a good mattress to sleep on.

Please look at this video to learn how to maintain low back mobility and you can do these exercises if you have Low Back Pain, to help resolve your pain and get you ready for golf.

I hope this helps you in your understanding of Low Back pain and how it may affect your golf.
