Around the Course

Course renovations have been completed and the large tree has been removed from the area near the 10th tee. With the renovations completed and finer weather it is hoped that the area of the 6th fairway and 7th tee can be completed. It is also hoped that new paths between the 4th green and the 5th tee can also be completed as well as the path on the 7th tee. It has been agreed that the area immediately adjacent to the back half of the 7th tee will become a no play zone with a compulsory drop zone established similar to the 9th hole. This area will be landscaped.

The 2021 Men's Pennant series has stalled due to the last two rounds being washed out. We  are awaiting to reschedule these matches. The Ladies will be represented by one team this year and we wish them all the success. The ladies have played one match and defeated Shelly Beach 5 matches to 2. Well done ladies. The Men's Masters pennants and Super Seniors pennants will be commencing in May and August and nomination sheets will be on the noticeboard shortly.

Nearest the Pins

A change in the NTP has been approved by the match committee the following will apply:

Monday No NTP

All players will be eligible for the eagles nest on the 12th hole.

It has also been agreed that should female members wish to enter the ladies competition on Thursday instead of the medley event they can do so by advising the pro shop when they register to play.

Greens Email

Members wishing to address any issue regarding the course are encouraged to use the following email address: greens@gosfordgolf.com.au. This email is referred directly directly to the head of the Greens Committee. Greg Skilbeck will provide any information and response that the members may require.

Gimmies

It has been brought to my attention that this practice has again reared its ugly head. This practice is completely illegal and against the rules of golf other than match play competition. Any member or members found or to be reported regarding this practise will be automatically suspended for 3 months. This is cheating against the whole field.

When on the course members are reminded of the following

  • All Social play is off the yellow markers. Members please do not practice off the plates or the blue, white or red teeing areas. When practicing please remember to take a bucket and fill your divots.
  • If members notice any player playing off the wrong markers please report to the pro shop.
  • Please repair all divots on the greens and around the course,
  • Sand Buckets are back on the bucket trees on the 1st and 10th tees
  • Please keep up with the group in front
  • Please stick to the ready golf principles
  • Please do not drive carts in arears where they are prohibited. Please stay on the designated paths and outside the blue lines.

Ladies Captain's Report

Liz Robinson & I met with the President Paul Scholberg a few weeks ago to discuss a number of things including the financial implications of the Ladies having our 2 tee start on a Tuesday. Paul flagged that unless we keep our numbers up around the 80 mark, it's likely we will have to move to a one tee start. Gosford Golf Club is a business and the Board of Directors has to look at the course as an income generator. By opening the 10th tee they believe that revenue from the course can be increased substantially. The Ladies will obviously still have 2 tees for our big days, championships etc. The challenge is to try to keep our numbers up on a Tuesday to maintain our two tee start.

Early March saw round one of the CCWGA Brooch & the first medal round. The Top Ten Shootout has also kicked off with 61 players registered which means we have a very generous prize pool. The competition to qualify is likely to be fierce.

We were fortunate to get St Patrick's Dice Day in before the torrential Irish weather set in. Hopefully everyone enjoyed the change in format from the usual Joker Day.  91 players turned up which was a wonderful & most wore green or orange which brightened the day. Thanks to Liz Robinson for all her hard work. She sold early raffles & while we enjoyed our golf she decorated the tables, organised the Irish music & set up the tea & coffee station with free muffins. The CCWGA 40th anniversary photos were up on the screen in the background which brought back memories for many of us. Jan Martin drove around the course taking photos of the players & we thank her for that. We trailed Golf Genius, a new booking program, which allows players to pre pay for their golf & alleviated the crush in the Pro Shop when we have a shotgun start. The trial went well & we hope to use it again on some of our big days.

Round one of the CCWGA Pennants which was due to be played at Gosford on the 15th of March had to be cancelled as carts were not allowed on the course. The next round for the Gosford team will be at Wyong against Shelly Beach on the 29th of March. The latest draw is on the notice board in the Ladies Locker room. Unfortunately the pennant clinic on Friday the 19th had to be cancelled; however Sharon emailed the relevant information to the players.

With the easing of the Covid 19 restrictions the NTPS' are back in play. A reminder that Tuesdays will be as follows: Division 1 on the 5th & 12th and Division 2 on the 8th & 14th holes. On Thursdays there is only one NTP on the 8th hole over the field. Medal rounds will remain the same for Division 1 and Division 2 & 3 will share the 8th & 14th holes.

The Eagles Nest on the 12th hole is in play every day & players are required to inform the Pro Shop if their tee shot is inside 60cms of the pin. (There is no NTP sheet to fill in)

Open Day is coming up on the 11th of May. The timesheet will be open for members shortly. Please put your teams down via the "My Club" platform & the Pro Shop will allocate starting holes once the members & visitors names have been uploaded. Please note those groups with carts will start on the holes further from the clubhouse. We've had a pleasing response from visiting teams & the numbers are looking good. Please remember to donate your handiwork, a voucher or similar for the "new concept" raffles for Open Day, the profits will go to Lifeline. Ricochet clothing is going well & we thank you all for your ongoing support.

A reminder that the first round of the 4BBB Knockout will be played on Thursday the 29th of April, the nomination sheet is in the locker room & nominations close on the 22nd of April. This Thursday competition is an excellent introduction to the match play format & a confidence builder for potential pennant players.

F-Troop Report

For the month of March 2021 we had restricted use of the course due to the high level of rainfall which meant we could not take heavy equipment or carts out onto the course.

We did however find plenty of work cleaning up at the front and behind the clubhouse and carparks.

Our average workers this month were approximately 10 and we welcomed Trevor Harrison back from sick leave.

Projects worked on this month were:

  • Rubbish and loose timber pick up around the course when we could.
  • Tree maintenance - undercutting.
  •  Hedge maintenance
  •  Firewood deliveries.
  •  Removal of weed from the dams.
  •  General garden weeding and tidying up.
  • Cleaning of the bush toilets.
  •  tidy up around the clubhouse and BBQ area.
  •  Tidy up of pathways to the 1st and 10th tees including the wedding garden and practice nets.
  • Clean- up of the car parks.

You will have noticed the removal of large dangerous trees at the 1st tee - this was carried out by professionals.

Our firewood is now ready for delivery so put in your orders early before a cold snap arrives.

We are always looking for more volunteers so if you have some spare time on Monday mornings to help with our projects we would be happy to see you.

The F-Troopers meet at the Green Keepers Shed at 7.00 am and work through until 10.00 am after which we have morning tea supplied by the club.

Please contact either:

News From the Pro Shop

Sadly we had to say goodbye to one of our member's last month. Vic Hocking was not only a commendable person, but we all appreciated his unique style. He contributed his time to the junior program over the years and his family very generously donated the prize money left on his account toward our junior program. We will all miss Vic and we send our best wishes out to his family and friends.

With all the rainy weather we have been having, we wanted to let all members know of an alternative procedure to cancel your booking. If we know there will be a lot of cancellations (and a lot of phone calls) we open the competition up so that you can change your booking online. It can be very busy trying to phone the club, so this will alleviate some of the phone congestion.

We have our next Callaway fitting day on Tuesday 27th April from 12pm - 4pm. Bookings are essential and can be done through the Pro Shop.

FJ Shoes

We have all new FJ styles which are displayed on the FJ wall, as well as very discounted ladies shoes on the sales table.

Physio Golf Blog

By Russell Tuckerman
Physiotherapist at East Gosford Physiotherapist

Do you get Sore Hips when you play golf?

Hips work hard when you play golf, as a result you need your Gluteals or Butt muscles to play their part.

Not only do they need to help you walk for hours and help maintain your posture, they also need you to rotate sufficiently (especially your front leg) so you can turn efficiently with a golf swing.

Two common reasons for hip pain with golf are weakness in your Gluteals (Buttock muscles) and tightness in your hip joints. This muscle weakness often leads to hip tightness. This will create a muscle imbalance around your hips and pelvis and irritation of the hip bursa. This condition is called Hip Bursitis.

See this video link to understand hip bursitis - https://youtu.be/tVox8HUFmlc

"Weak glutes" is a modern day curse because we just sit too often and for too long!

Sitting for long periods changes our posture and inhibits our gluteal or buttock muscles causing weakness. If you have a sway back and a flat bum - you have gluteal weakness. A sign of gluteal weakness is an inability to stand on one leg for 30 seconds and balance. This weakness can be a bit insidious and just gets worse over time, often without you being aware. Once these muscles become weak you are more likely to develop low back pain. You will find it difficult to stand for long periods, walk long distances and even have trouble getting in and out of a chair or a car seat.

Gluteal weakness is evident in all age brackets, but we tend to see it more commonly as we age, (post 50 years) and this can lead to Gluteal Tendinopathy.

Gluteal Tendinopathy is a condition which affects the hip tendon which attaches to the bony lump you feel on the very outside part of your hip. This is often a problem when you sleep on your side at night as this creates a compression of the tendon and bursa which results in pain.

This aggravation of pain at night will carry over to your golf game the next day and you will tend to get sore hips playing golf.

To help you manage hip pain, review our stretching video from last month -

https://youtu.be/-bB0HmG2fP0

Also look at our 3 step program to Healthy Hips below .....

Next Month we will focus on Gluteal and hip strengthening to complement core strengthening.

East Gosford Physio has a   3 Step Healthy Hip Program

Step 1 - Remove Your Pain

This step begins with accurate diagnosis to make sure we target what is causing the pain.

Gluteal tendinopathy is often present alongside hip bursitis (as discussed above) preventing full resolution of your hip pain.

Treatment often involves:

  • Massage
  • Gentle hip mobilisation techniques
  • Isometric exercises

Step 2 - Rebuild and Restore

When you have been struggling with an ongoing hip bursitis or hip injury, it will have impacted the way you walk, sit, climb stairs, sleep and play golf.

It is vital once we have removed your pain to address these abnormal movement patterns in your:

  • Core
  • Pelvis
  • Low back
  • This will get you playing golf again without pain.

Step 3 - Improve Performance

Whether your goal is to be able to:

  • Play and enjoy golf
  • Walk 18 holes
  • Get back to the gym
  • Walk on the beach

Our 3rd step is vital to make sure that you have the strength in the muscles around your hip and pelvis, to get back to doing the things you love without pain or restriction.

Go to this link to gain access to our FREE eBook about hip pain management,

https://eastgosfordphysio.com.au/wp-content/uploads/solution_to_hip_pain.pdf

I hope this helps you understand why you may be getting hip pain when you play golf and provide you with some advice and solutions of how to manage your hip pain.

Good luck and let me know how you go with this advice and if it helps your hip pain.

Cheers,
