Benefits & Responsibilities

As a member of a club, any club, one has benefits but also responsibilities. The benefits are usually clear and obvious. In our case, we get to play golf and socialise with likeminded people.

Membership also comes with responsibilities. These are sometimes forgotten or perhaps are less clear.  Even if we feel we are doing the right thing our actions and behaviours may have impacts on the course and/or other golfers.

We would all prefer the course to be in the best condition possible, with well grassed fairways and true, receptive greens. The greens staff work hard to make this a reality but the club needs golfers to do their part. Filling in divots, repairing pitch marks and keeping golf carts on paths and away from greens and tees. It is likely most members think they already do all these things. And the truth is most do. However, you only need to play on any of our competition days to see evidence that some players do not. It is also too easy to blame social players. And while this is sometimes an issue the evidence is seen during any competition day when social players are not around.

What are the consequences? Divots in the rough are particularly problematic as we can currently only prefer our lies on the fairway. Divots on the tee box cause a lot of damage and we have sand boxes at each tee meaning there should be no excuses for not repairing these divots. Not repairing pitch marks means lower quality greens and a poorer putting experience. Driving golf carts where they should not be driven leads to tighter lies and further damage to green and tee surrounds.

These issues have been raised with members many times but the complaints about the course conditions - related to this type of damage - keep coming in.

Responsibility One: Fill in divots. On fairways, tees and in the rough. Repair pitch marks on greens.

Etiquette and courtesy is another responsibility. We all miss putts, hit trees, go into hazards and so on. That's golf. Lately it seems these events are followed by the F-bomb at a level audible across the course and perhaps even at the hospital. Please keep your expressions of disappointment within your playing group.

Responsibility Two: Behave on the course as you would in any public place.

Dress code. We all have different ideas on what matches and what looks good. However, please wear clothes that are consistent with the dress regulations of the Club. There is a poster just outside the Pro Shop that clearly shows this dress code. We need to remind ourselves that we represent the club. The staff in the Pro Shop are only too happy to show you what is worn on the golfing catwalks.

Responsibility Three: Dress well.

The sandboxes are now on every tee and some people are using them as ashtrays and garbage bins. Please dispose of your rubbish and your cigarette buts in the garbage bins provided. Too often we see these discarded on the grass all over the golf course. Every tee has a garbage bin.

Responsibility Four: Dispose of cigarette butts and rubbish in the provided bins.

Now for the biggie. For many years we hear; "You know. So, and so can't score", "he/she only wins because they are creative with their score" "His/her interpretation of the rules leaves a lot do be desired". Only our members can do something about it. If you feel strongly that a member is manufacturing their own round, has written their own appendix in the rule book, then put in a written complaint and back it up with evidence and witnesses. If you are not willing to do that then keep it to yourself and do not blacken someone's name with innuendo. Golf is a game of personal honesty and to anyone who feels that cheating is OK, remember, you not only cheat yourself but steal from fellow members by denying them a prize or a dollar bet.

Responsibility Five: Be honest, score correctly and respect your fellow members

While this list of responsibilities may seem long if we all take these seriously the benefits will follow. We'll have a better course by looking after it both collectively as well as individually. By not inappropriately drawing attention to your mistakes the course will be a friendly and more inclusive place for all members to enjoy. Better dressed golfers promotes the Club.  Less garbage for the green staff and F-troop to clean up so their time can be devoted to the betterment of playing conditions. Better and honest scoring benefits us all.

Happy golfing

Mens Captain's Report

Welcome to the December newsletter. With the festive season coming I would like this opportunity to wish all members a safe and happy holiday season.

December also marks the beginning of the warm weather and the start to amended timesheets. Members are reminded to take every precaution during the warmer months. Unfortunately because of Covid we are unable to provide sunscreen at the 1st and 10th tees.

The December/January period brings amended timesheets to allow for the holiday social golf. From the 16th January there will be social play allowed in vacant competition timeslots. Members are reminded to treat these visitors cordially and make sure they come back to enjoy our great course.

The time sheet for Wednesdays and Saturdays will be two tee in morning and one tee for the later tee times.

At the time of writing there has been no advice from Health NSW, Golf Australia or Golf NSW regarding the changing to current requirements. With the borders opening and the change to numbers at gatherings there may be some changes in the future. I will keep you all informed of any changes.g the handicap event.

The Mens CCDGA pennants will resume in December/January to complete the 2020 programme. Ladies Captain's Report

I think it's fair to say that most of us will not be sorry\ to see the end of 2020. Hopefully 2021 will allow for the smooth running of our golfing programme.

The CCWGA sponsored day on the 10th of November was a success. We had a good field and trophies went down to 7th place thanks to the generous donations from the District. Funds from the raffle were donated to the CCWGA nominated charity, Lifeline.

The popular Top Ten Shootout was played on the 17th of November in perfect conditions. Kay Baillie was the winner and Helen Stuart was runner-up. The standard of golf was amazing & all the qualifiers are to be congratulated. Unfortunately due to the Covid restrictions only the players, caddies and committee were allowed on course, however the atmosphere was great and I encourage everyone to enter this fun competition in 2021.

The events on the 1st and 3rd of December have hams on offer for the winners. These have been kindly donated by the Club. Please put your names down for these events.

We close the year on the 8th of December with the North Pole Ambrose which will be followed by our Christmas lunch and the 2020 presentation of trophies. It promises to be a happy day thanks to our President Liz Robinson who, despite many challenges along the way never gave up on her plan to give the Gosford Ladies a wonderful finale to the year. Thank you Liz! We have 24 teams playing golf and we look forward to seeing everyone in their festive outfits.

The Summer Competition will take place over December and January and I look forward to welcoming everyone at Opening Day on Tuesday the 2nd of February 2021.

On behalf of the Ladies Section and the members I extend my sincere thanks to the Board of Directors, Kieran Moran, the Pro Shop, the staff in the Office, the Bar and Bistro staff and Dave Nicholls the Greenkeeper and his team, for their hard work throughout the year. Thank you to the wonderful F Troop volunteers for all they do around the course and to Jan Martin for her wonderful newsy blog.

Although the golf programme was much modified this year, the number of ladies playing regularly has been encouraging. We are also pleased to welcome all our new Lady members, the majority of whom have come through the Rookies set up.

2020 has been a challenging year but we have survived & hopefully next year will be easier. I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and good golfing in the New Year.

Kieran recently delivered another successful Rookies Program and Jake will be leading the next one which will start mid January and run for four consecutive Saturdays from 12:00pm - 1:30pm.

We've been so happy with the results of all our programs and it's great to see these ladies stepping out of their comfort zone and playing in the ladies comp. Helen is a great advocate in taking these ladies under her wing and we appreciate all the help from her as well as the other lady members that have assisted in transitioning these ladies into playing comp.

If you know of any ladies that would be interested in the program, please have them email rookies@gosfordgolf.com.au

Shoulder Pain and Golf

By Russell Tuckerman
Physiotherapist at East Gosford Physiotherapy

Do you have pain in your shoulder when you play golf?

You may have an impingement or bursitis in your shoulder, and this can be fixed and golf can be painfree!

Let me explain - An impingement is when the ball of the shoulder compresses the tissue that sits between the ball and the ridge at the top of the shoulder. This tissue is bursa and tendon, and both these structures don't like being squashed!

Please watch this video for a further explanation.

https://youtu.be/Ej82P1w6kCM

When this impingement happens the bursa, which is a small fluid filled sac between the bone and tendon, and is designed to absorb friction, can become inflamed and this is called Bursitis. (explained in next video)

https://youtu.be/AL3k1bxVvQQ

The golf swing naturally compresses the bursa and tendon of the shoulder and this should be pain free. It is only when the bursa becomes inflamed (Bursitis) or your shoulder muscles (rotator cuff) become injured does this compression become painful. The small sac of fluid expands with swelling fluid and becomes irritable and sore to touch. This now leads to the swinging action of golf further squashing this inflamed tissue and causing pain and weakness.

Don't let shoulder pain STOP you enjoying OR playing golf!

Physiotherapy can really help you get back to golf without shoulder pain.

We often work with your GP who may advise on medication and/ or steroid injections to settle down the bursitis or swelling.

Your physio will then help you re-position your shoulder blade and re-balance your shoulder muscles to stop you impinging with your golf swing. This can be done with some specific hands on treatment and massage.

We are then able to give you golf specific shoulder exercises to improve your rotator cuff strength.

So, don't stop playing due to shoulder pain!

Do something about it because it can be 'fixed', and we can help you get back onto the golf course again.

Happy golfing!
