Mens Captain's Report

Welcome to the January newsletter. Happy New Year to one and all.

January has started off with a bang with wet weather and the re-introduction of our Covid Rules.

Members are reminded of the following:

  • No rakes in bunkers
  • Preferred lies in bunkers
  • Ball washers are not in use
  • Score your own card and do not exchange after the round
  • Do not touch the flags and use the lifter with your putter
  • Bubblers are not in use so no action necessary
  • After the round do not shake hands but elbow or touch clubs to thank your playing partners
  • Advise the members that only one person should be driving the cart
  • Do not touch your fellow players golf ball or mark their golf ball
  • Try to keep the 1.5-meter distance
  • When in proshop you must wear a mask. The kiosk window will be open should you wish not to go into proshop.

 In the club house:

  • No mingling, remain at your table
  • One-dollar betting or the five-dollar club is still not allowed
  • Strict 1.5-meter distancing
  • You must wear a mask if in the poker machine area

A question has been raised regarding our tree root rule and the definition of what constitutes  a "clublength" According to the rules of golf a clublength is determined by the longest club in the players bag excluding the putter. Members are advised that this rule should be followed. This would normally be the driver.

Over the holiday period we have introduced amended timesheets to cater for the holidaying visitors. I would like to thank members for their patience and their welcoming attitude to these guests. On a small issue it has been noted that some of these social players are playing off the members markers. Perhaps a friendly word to these players will help protect our course.

The board has changed the By Laws of the club which now allows members with a disability an exemption to where they can drive their carts. Any member who wishes to take advantage of this ruling must apply in writing to the Director of Golf with supporting medical evidence. Once approved, members will be given special signage to denote their status.

Members will have noted the damage caused to the course during the recent heavy rains. The majority of this damage was caused by carts. Please follow the simple rules of keeping behind the blue lines at the front of greens and where no blue line exists, keep ten metres from the edge of the greens. If you notice any person not following these instructions please report to the proshop. I appreciate it is sometimes difficult to police some of the visitors and social players.

At a recent board meeting it has been suggested that we re-introduce an information and rules night for new members. I will arrange for the first one of these to be held in February and invite any new members to attend. If members wish I can also have a fully accredited rules official to answer any of your questions.

The Mens CCDGA pennants will resume in January to complete the 2020 programme. The 2021 programme will commence at the end of January with nomination forms for A,B,C and juniors now  on the proshop notice board. These nominations will close on the 16th January which is also the cut off point for handicap eligibility. A grade up to 12.4, B Grade up to 18.4 and C Grade above 18.4. Bob Thomas has again volunteered to manage the men's pennants teams and Richard Brien the juniors. My thanks goes out to the two gentlemen. Please give them your full support.

F-Troop Report

For the month of December 2020 we had a lot of high winds which brought down a lot of loose timber and rubbish around the course. We also prioritized hedge maintenance and shrub trimming to have a neat and tidy look for the Christmas period.

The average of 10/11 volunteers each week has helped to get our projects finished.

Projects worked on this month were:

  • rubbish and loose timber pick up around the course
  • general tree & hedge maintenance
  • firewood preparation for next year's firewood supplies
  • removal of weed from the dams
  • general garden weeding and tidying up
  • cleaning of the bush toilets
  • tidy up around the clubhouse and BBQ area and of pathways to the 1st and 10th tees including the wedding garden and practice nets weeding
  • trimming of shrubs at the front gardens
  • replacement of Broken seat at the 6th tee
  • planting in of donated plants at the 14th garden
  • hedge at the 4th tee trimmed and weeded

We are always looking for more volunteers so if you have some spare time on Monday mornings to help out with our projects we would be happy to see you. We have been down on numbers having lost three regulars for various reasons including work commitments so we would welcome more volunteers.

The F-Troopers meet at the Green Keepers Shed at 7.00 am and work through until 10.00 am after which we have morning tea supplied by the club.

Please contact either:

Superintendent's Report

Happy new year to everyone!

December was wet. We had 250mm of rain across 15 days.

The course is holding up well.

The greens cutting height has been raised again to 4mm. Consistently cutting the greens wet, with a 6oo kg mower, plus large golfing numbers, is placing the greens under huge amounts of stress. Along with this mechanical stress we are seeing abnormal insect activity and Fungus. All can result in sudden harm and or death to the plant.

The bunker rake and bunker pump are working overtime. The boys now have reached double figures as far as pushing the bunker faces up.

When driving golf carts please be mindful of wet areas and follow the blue lines.

Course Superintendent

Physio Golf Blog:

Feet and Ankle Pain with Golf

By Russell Tuckerman
Physiotherapist at East Gosford Physiotherapy

Does foot and ankle pain stop you from enjoying golf?

There are many reasons for foot and ankle pain and I do advise a full assessment if your pain has been present for months BUT here are some simple things to consider which may help.

Aging golfers unfortunately have aging feet!

This may mean you have some degenerative changes in your feet joints and soft tissue leading to osteoarthritis. For more information about Osteoarthritis please look at this ebook-

https://eastgosfordphysio.com.au/wp-content/uploads/Understanding-Osteoarthritis-Ebook.pdf

When you develop pain or stiffness in  your feet, you often go onto develop weakness in the calf and feet muscles and tightness in the back of your legs.

Weakness in the feet and calf and tightness in the leg muscles are all very manageable, see the video below to learn more about calf strength.

Do you know calf muscle weakness is correlated with an increased risk of falling, so this indicates how important calf muscle strength is with golf as you negotiate unstable surface and step in and out of bunkers.

If your calf muscles are weak you will fatigue while walking 18 holes. As you fatigue your muscles become less effective in helping you to create power in your golf swing but also in just controlling your posture.

Foot posture and control is important to prevent foot pain. Your 'arch' of your foot is a feature of muscle control and bone position.

If your arch is dropped or pronated, you will put more abnormal forces on your feet joints and muscles and this can lead to foot  pain while you are playing  golf.

If you believe you have a "dropped arch", I suggest you have this assessed, as  a simple orthotic can often really help to control  your pronation  and STOP foot pain with golf.

East Gosford Physio can assess your feet and walking gait with our gait scan technology. This provides an image of your foot control during your walking cycle which we use to prescribe orthotics which will fit comfortably in your golf shoes. We will also assess your golf shoes to ensure they are the right shoes for your type of foot.

Please contact us on 43237499 if you require this assessment, as we provide a special rate for Gosford Golf Club members, and we can help you manage your foot pain with golf.

Happy Golfing ......
